Loureiro’s Career and Impact
Nuno Loureiro was a leading figure in plasma science and fusion research. Born in Portugal, he pursued his passion for science from a young age, earning degrees from the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon and Imperial College London. His work included postdoctoral research at Princeton University and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in the UK.
Before joining MIT in 2016, Loureiro served as a principal investigator at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal. He rose through the ranks at MIT, becoming deputy director in 2022 and director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center in May 2024.
In January, Loureiro was honored with an early career award from President Biden, recognizing his contributions to the field. He expressed his commitment to solving humanity’s most pressing problems through fusion energy, stating, “Fusion energy will change the course of human history.”
