Jersey students are gaining hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and conservation through a new partnership between Le Rocquier School and GROW Jersey. The eight-week programme, held at GROW Jersey’s field in Sion, aims to equip young people with practical skills outside the traditional classroom setting.

Bridging Education and Environmental Stewardship

The initiative was spearheaded by Le Rocquier’s employability team, recognizing the value of experiential learning in developing well-rounded individuals. The programme covers a range of tasks, from planting hedges and weeding to understanding the principles of sustainability. This approach acknowledges that environmental awareness isn’t just about abstract concepts, but also about actively participating in the natural world.

Student Perspectives: A Growing Appreciation

Students participating in the programme have expressed enthusiasm for the practical, outdoor learning experience. Billy, 16, highlighted the value of “the culture here,” emphasizing his desire to contribute to the island’s environmental health. Leanne, also 16, described the experience as “the best thing in the whole world,” appreciating the opportunity to escape the classroom and engage directly with nature.

These reactions underscore a crucial point: many young people want to engage with environmental issues, but need accessible pathways to do so. The programme provides that pathway, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.

The Programme’s Goals: Beyond Skill-Building

Ellen Hawgood from Le Rocquier approached GROW Jersey to establish this collaboration, stating the importance of simply getting students “out in nature.” This isn’t just about teaching them how to grow vegetables; it’s about fostering a deeper connection to the environment, with the hope that they will carry these skills and values forward for future generations.

The ultimate aim is to empower students with the knowledge and skills to contribute to a healthier environment, not just for themselves, but also for their children.

This initiative represents a growing trend toward integrating practical environmental education into school curricula. By connecting students with real-world challenges, GROW Jersey and Le Rocquier are cultivating a generation equipped to tackle the environmental concerns facing the island.
