It’s smaller than Earth. It’s far enough away that a fast rocket takes days to get there. Yet it controls so much of our daily reality. Its gravity drags at the oceans. This creates the tides. High tide. Low tide. The rhythm of the coast.
But the Moon does more than pull water. It dictates what we see in the sky.
How the Moon’s Phase Cycle Works
The Moon moves across the sky every night. Like the Sun, it rises and sets. This is just Earth spinning. But the Moon is also busy. It orbits our planet.
One full loop takes nearly 30 days.
During this cycle, the Moon changes shape. Sometimes it’s a bright, full circle. Other times, it’s a thin crescent. Occasionally, it goes completely dark.
This isn’t a trick of the eye. It’s geometry.
The Sun illuminates the Moon differently depending on where it sits in its orbit.
- New Moon: The Moon sits between Earth and the Sun. We see its night side. It looks dark.
- First Quarter: About 7.5 days later, we see a growing half-circle.
- Full Moon: Around day 15, Earth is between the Sun and Moon. The full face is lit. It glows bright.
- Last Quarter: By day 22.5, the light fades. We see the opposite half.
- Back to New Moon: Day 29.5. The cycle resets.
This is the basic mechanics of lunar phases. It’s predictable. It’s reliable.
When the Sky Goes Dark: Lunar Eclipses
Sometimes the cycle breaks. Not forever. Just for a night.
The Moon can darken rapidly. Then brighten again.
This is a lunar eclipse.
It happens when Earth blocks the Sun’s light from hitting the Moon. The planet casts a shadow. The Moon moves into it.
Watching one is a rare privilege. You witness a shift in the cosmos. The familiar face of the night vanishes. Then returns.
It’s a reminder that we are living on a moving rock. Orbiting a star. While our neighbor watches over us.
Or does it?
The Moon is drifting away. Slowly. Centimeters per year. One day, it will be further. The tides will be weaker. The nights will look different.
