Pinkish-orange lips. A black face. A new primate just showed up in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hidden way up high in the canopy. Lomami National Park. It’s dense there. Tropical. Hard to see anything without looking.
People spotted this thing back in 2008 Conservationists saw it then. Did they run for the books immediately? No. It waited ten more years.
Another sighting finally pushed an international team to actually go look for it. They went. They studied. Now science says yes, this is real. It’s a new species.
Dr. Karen Laurenson is Africa director for the Frankfurt Zoological Society. She calls it “amazing.” Not a shock, but she says the natural world still holds a lot of secrets. Stuff we haven’t explored yet.
There is still “a lot out there”
Do we really have to keep going back into the jungle to find what’s been hiding? Maybe. Maybe not. But the monkey is there now. Waiting in the leaves.
